I decided to try out a new series here at DC Urban Dad cuz it's Friday, it's been a long week, the weekend is around the corner and let's face it the people in my RSS reader are waaaaaaaaay more interesting then I could ever be.
So, here's the deal:
Each week, I am going to randomly pick from one of the blogs in my reader. I will email you five random questions - new ones each week. Now, you do have the choice to play or not to play, but understand if you don't play then you agree to come to DC and baby sit for me free of charge.
So first up is FADKOG. For those of you who don't know who she, what the hell are you waiting for. Once you get there you won't be able to quit reading. So here goes, enjoy.....
1) What keeps you up at night?
Very little keeps me up at night. It's the things that wake me up in the middle of the night that I then obsess over that keeps me up, which range from everything from the mundane to the impossible. How I'm going to get the boys from one spot to the other when they have to both be somewhere at the same time. Things people have said to me that I dissect. Are my kids doing alright in school. Lately, I wake up in the night and miss my friend who recently past away, stories I wish I was able to figure out how to tell, and what I want to do when I grow up.
Then, of course, there's my silly fears of things that don't exist, such as Bigfoot, though I think it's not fair to Bigfoot to say it doesn't exist because really, do we know that for a fact? No. No we do not.
Heh.
2) If you could go back in time, what would you tell the 18 year old you?
Get over it. Don't worry about what someone called you or said to you or how they looked at you. There are going to be far bigger things that will come up in life, so deal. Hold a grudge if you want to, but don't hold it forever. It's stupid. Think less and have more fun. Don't be afraid to approach someone or speak up. Don't pretend to be something you're not just to make someone else happy or feel validated. Be more courageous. Please be more self-confidant. Please. Tell your Mom you hate your senior pictures if you hate them. Just because everyone else is getting a perm doesn't mean you should. Seriously. Don't. Don't freak out about not having a boyfriend when it seems like the whole world is in a relationship. When you get one, it's going to be awesome. Not all the time, of course, but a lot of the time it will be. I mean it about the perm. I also mean it about the highlights. You're good the way you are. Great even.
Basically, I'd tell my 18 year old self many of the same things I still (some days) have to tell myself today. At 18, we sometimes think we have everything figured out, but every day is a work in progress, no matter how many days we're racking up. Go with it.
3) What is your favorite time of fay and why?
Mid-morning. Around 10 a.m., or so. Still early, but it's getting just enough on in the day that you feel like you've got some things accomplished, but there's still a nice stretch of time ahead of you for all the other things that may need done. I also like 9:30 p.m., because that's after the kids have gone to bed and if I'm lucky, I can then stop the day's activities and sit in silence. I honestly crave silence.
4) What item do you carry with you at all times?
More than anything else, I carry a book with me at all times. I often read two or three books at the same time. I don't really advise it. I sometimes put pressure on myself to finish them even if they're horrible, but this year, I've been keeping a list of all the books I've read - and I've read far more very good books than ones I consider horrible, thankfully - and I find something truly satisfying about seeing how that list has grown when I add a completed title to it. So when I leave for work (at a bookstore! huzzah!) I grab one I'm in the middle of to read on my breaks. When I crawl into bed at night, it's with a book. If I have an appointment and know I'll be waiting, I wait with a book. A six-hour car ride? Is there room for this bag filled with 10 books? Yes? Excellent! This has truly always been the case with me. I love everything about the process of reading. Selecting the title. Opening the book and taking in the scent of the pages. Stealing away time to read them. The satisfaction of completing them. Love!
5) What does your perfect day look like?
I've answered this question three different ways and erased each one! It's hard for me to imagine what my perfect day would look like! I want to say it would involve my family in some way, and it likely would, but I also want to say I'd spend it selfishly doing things just for me. Reading (again) or catching up with a friend I've not talked to in forever. Going somewhere for lunch where there was no prize at the end of the meal. Seeing U2 in concert, which would be easy because I'd be married to Bono. Doing things that take care of me and me only! I imagine I could do a few of these things in my regular, not always perfect days, but damn, U2 charges a lot to see them in concert!
