Is there a conspiracy brewing in BlogLog land?

Spam_1 Spam, spam, spam - I had a college roommate that used to each Spam - actually imitation Spam which is really hard to believe that there imitation - imitation meat actually exists.  Anyway...Cord Silverstein over at Marketing Hipster believes that he might have uncovered a bit of a conspiracy brewing over at MyBlogLog and Yahoo

Apparently the Yahoo! Messenger MyBlogLog group has just over 1200 members.  According to Cord's research, almost half of those users:

  • Have never bothered to add a personalized picture.
  • Have never gotten a single contact.
  • Have never registered a blog of their own.
  • Have never received one message from another member.

His theory - Yahoo! is seeding their group with members to increase their visibility and that Eric and MyBlogLog is facilitating or perhaps knows that this going on.

I feel that it is safe bet that yes - they are seeding their group.  However, I am not sure that I really care.  Yeah, their community might be big, but I tend not to choose communities that way.  I joined Cord's and many others because I like what each of those blogs have to say - I WANT to be part of those to learn and expand my thinking.  I enjoy reading Marketing Hipster - I want to be part of that community, but I don't actively seek communities.  And I am not interested in joining communities that you can tell our corporate driven.

Guess my words of advice would be don't hate the playa - hate the game.

PS - thanks to Cord for finding this and being the warning signal to all those that might think about joining.
